Barcelona move closer to Spanish title after beating Espanyol

Barcelona's Gerard Pique celebrates his goal scored against Espanyol during their Spanish La Liga match at the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona, Spain on Sunday.
Barcelona need just one more point to clinch their third straight Spanish league title after a    2—0 Catalan derby defeat of Espanyol on Sunday.
Spain World Cup heroes Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique scored for Barca, who are eight points ahead of Real Madrid with just three matches left.
On Saturday, Real enjoyed a 6—2 romp away to Sevilla, with league top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo banging in four goals.
Barca will be champions if Real fail to beat Getafe on Tuesday, or by earning at least one point away to Levante on Wednesday.
Before the Catalan derby there was an emotional minute’s silence for golf legend Severiano Ballesteros, a keen Barca fan, who died on Saturday, aged 54.
Iniesta put Barca ahead in the 29th minute by taking advantage of a mistake from Javi Lopez, and then beating Carlos Kameni with a low near—post dive.
David Villa, in poor form, should have extended Barca’s lead on three occasions but missed each time.
Three minutes into the second half Pique made it 2—0 by heading in a Xavi centre from the left, after getting in front of defender Raul Rodriguez.
Barca never allowed Espanyol to come out of their defensive shell, enjoying their usual 75—per—cent possession, and could have scored more goals at the end.
Barca coach Pep Guardiola said: “For the first time, the league title is very close. We depend on ourselves and we must clinch it against Levante. If we had not won today the battle would have gone until the last day, which is what we wanted to avoid.” “We played an excellent first half, but after the first goal we let our attention level go down,” he said. “Overall, we played a good game.” The defeat leaves Espanyol in eighth place, with their dreams of snatching a Europa League berth in tatters.
Sunday’s late game was a defiant 3—1 win for Osasuna away to fellow strugglers Zaragoza.
Angel Lafita gave Zaragoza an early lead, but spirited Osasuna struck back in the second half with goals from Javier Camunas, Sergio Fernandez and Kike Sola.
Almeria, already relegated, are bottom with just 26 points. Then come Hercules on 33, Deportivo Coruna and Zaragoza on 39, Getafe on 40, then Real Sociedad and Osasuna together on 41.
Sunday’s lunchtime match was a colourless 0—0 draw between midtable Mallorca and fourth—placed Villarreal, which leaves the yellows five points behind Valencia in the battle for third place and direct entry to the Champions League.

Praise throughout Spain for champions Barcelona

FC Barcelona's supporters celebrate their team's Spanish league title in Barcelona, Spain on Wednesday.
Barcelona received fulsome praise throughout the Spanish media on Thursday after clinching a third straight Liga title the previous day.
Barca finished the job off with a 1-1 draw on Wednesday at midtable Levante, and the final whistle produced noisy celebrations throughout Catalonia.
Pep Guardiola’s talented team then flew quickly back to Barcelona, and went to their Camp Nou stadium in a special bus to celebrate with the fans.
Around 100,000 fans celebrated by the Camp Nou and in the famous Ramblas de Canaletas until the early hours of Thursday in a civilized manner, without the kind of public order problems and vandalism that have marred Barca celebrations in recent years.
Club president Sandro Rosell said early on Thursday that the official celebrations will take place on Friday evening, with Guardiola and his players driving through the city’s streets. The party will culminate in the Camp Nou, which will be open to all of the club’s members.
Angel Maria Villar, the president of the Spanish football federation, will hand over the Liga trophy to Rosell at a brief ceremony before Sunday’s home game against struggling Deportivo Coruna.
Against Deportivo, Guardiola will field a team of reserves and juniors, because his plan is to rest his weary first—teamers ahead of the May 28 Champions League final against Manchester United at Wembley.
On Thursday the media agreed that Lionel Messi and company have looked a little weary of late. Guardiola attributed to this to most of his players not having had “a proper break” since helping Spain to win the 2010 World Cup — and to four physically and emotionally exhausting clashes with Real Madrid between April 16 and May 3.
Madrid papers AS and Marca accepted that Barca had been the best team this season, though both expressed the hope that Real Madrid will get closer to them next year.
Real are currently six points behind Messi and company, who thrashed them 5—0 at the Camp Nou in November then knocked them out of the Champions League at the semi—final stage.
This is Barca’s 21st league title, 10 behind the historic rivals Real, but confirming Barca’s recent domination in La Liga. Since 1991, Barca have won 11 leagues and Real just six. Moreover, it is the ninth overall trophy since Guardiola was surprisingly given the job of coach in 2008.
That decision to appoint Guardiola was made by former club president Joan Laporta. Wednesday’s triumph was the first one achieved under Rosell, who took over from Laporta in June 2010.
Catalan radio station RAC—1 said that “this league triumph will help Rosell to escape from the shadow of Laporta ... and will give him more self—confidence.” Laporta and Rosell were formerly close friends but fell out in 2005. Rosell started his presidency by filing a civil lawsuit against Laporta for serious financial misdemeanours.
Rosell praised Guardiola on Thursday as “the best coach in history” and said that he was “very pleased” that Guardiola had agreed to continue for at least one more season, until June 2012.
Rosell also pointed out that most of Guardiola’s players come from the club’s famed youth sections. “This team is an example to everyone of fair play and the values of our club,” he said.
He then won praise for himself by dedicating the triumph to the victims of Wednesday’s earthquake which hit Lorca in Murcia province, causing at least eight deaths.

FIFA election campaign thrown into disarray

Sepp Blatter

All of a sudden, the June 1 election to elect a leader for football’s governing body has just one campaign theme - corruption.

Just when FIFA President Sepp Blatter hoped he had put the organization’s corruption problems behind him, English claims that six members of the executive committee were involved in bribery during World Cup bidding contests have thrown his bid for a fourth term into disarray.

The 75—year—old Blatter is battling Mohammed bin Hammam of Qatar for one of the world’s most influential sporting jobs.

The accusations were made in the British parliament on Monday, and FIFA fought back on Tuesday, demanding to see evidence to back up the claims against a quarter of the 24—man group that runs world football.

Blatter promised to resolve the crisis before the election.
“We have to do it now immediately. We have exactly three weeks to do so,” Blatter said in an interview with Qatar—based network Al—Jazeera.

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke wrote to England’s Football Association asking for a complete report plus “all documentary evidence” from David Triesman, the former leader of England’s 2018 bid.

Triesman told British lawmakers that four long—standing FIFA officials - Jack Warner, Nicolas Leoz, Ricardo Teixeira and Worawi Makudi - requested bribes in the 2018 bidding.
Lawmakers were also told in a submission from The Sunday Times newspaper that Qatar paid $1.5 million to two more FIFA officials, Issa Hayatou and Jacques Anouma, for the 2022 contest. Qatar won the vote, beating the United States in the final round.

FIFA said it has asked the newspaper for more evidence of information it received from a whistleblower within Qatar’s bid.

Valcke requested detailed evidence in order to “examine the situation thoroughly and with clear—sightedness,” FIFA said.

As FIFA’s top administrator, responsibility falls on Valcke to ask FIFA’s ethics court to open official investigations against any of the six under suspicion.

Leoz’s spokesman, Nestor Benitez, called the accusations “pure fantasy and morbid.”
“The South American football confederation always said that its votes were for Spain and no other country,” Benitez said.

The Qatar football federation has denied paying Hayatou, from Cameroon, and Ivory Coast’s Anouma, calling the allegations “wholly unreliable.”

Hayatou, the president of the Confederation of African Football, “categorically denies” the claims, the African body said Wednesday. He threatened legal action to defend his name.
Bin Hammam played a key role in delivering the 2022 World Cup to his homeland.
“FIFA is not corrupted,” the Asian Football Confederation President said. “We are victims of the popularity of the game.”

FIFA’s most senior American delegate, Chuck Blazer, said the alleged Qatari payments were his “greatest concern” among the English claims, and he expected the newspaper to publish more details on Sunday.

“If it turns out that what they’re saying is supported by fact, then I would have a lot to say on the matter,” Blazer said, without elaborating on what action he would seek.

The conduct of Warner, Leoz, Teixeira and Makudi in the 2018 contest won by Russia was described as “improper and unethical” by Triesman.

Warner, a FIFA vice president from Trinidad and Tobago, dismissed Triesman’s allegations, saying he “laughed like hell” when he heard them.

“I never asked anybody for anything,” Warner told Trinidad newspaper Newsday. “When these guys (England) came here, we promised to help. I showed them a place where they can put a playground. They promised to come back but they never did.”

Warner said he thinks English officials are bitter after gaining just two votes in the 2018 contest - one from its own representative on the executive committee.

“How come not even one person from Europe voted for them?” Warner told Newsday.
Valcke has questioned why the claims - which included incidents said to have occurred in 2009 - were not reported earlier.

“If it was known, why has it not come to our attention? We have called and asked people to let us know whatever you have in this process,” Valcke said.

Asked if the World Cup votes should be reopened, Valcke said the process had been conducted cleanly and all known evidence was examined.

Frank Lowy, the chairman of Football Federation Australia, said the allegations meant his country’s bid for the 2022 hosting rights was doomed from the start.

“I could have stood on my head for 24 months and we still couldn’t have got it,” he said.
Australia received only one vote and was eliminated in the first round. The bid cost taxpayers about $45 million.

“Out of the 44 votes for the two World Cups, Australia, England and America received (a total of) four votes,” Lowy told The Australian newspaper Thursday.

“So we were in good company. We had taken precautions before we started the process on who will be in the competition. With China not in, it was one of the conditions why we moved forward. Had they been in, we would certainly have had second thoughts (of pressing ahead).”
British Sports Minister Hugh Robertson said he had discussed the possibility of England breaking away from FIFA along with other countries.

“I have taken the temperature from other football associations around the world, particularly we did that in the wake of the 2018 bid,” Robertson told the BBC. “At the moment there is a desire to try to work to change FIFA from the inside. If FIFA is unable to do that then I would say all options are possible.

“But at the moment we very much want to work with them and try to convince them they need to go through exactly the same process that the IOC went through in the post—Salt Lake City process.”

Australia, which was badly defeated in the 2022 voting, played down suggestions it could ask for a revote.
“Ultimately this is a question that needs to be directed to FIFA the governing body,” Prime Minister Julia Gillard said Wednesday. “We were very disappointed. We put in a bid which was impressive and we pursued that bid in an ethical and impressive way.”

Ibrahimovic would be perfect for Man City: Mancini

AC Milan and Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic (foreground).

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has identified Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic as a man who could improve his side next season.

City booked their place in the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur and Mancini said Ibrahimovic could be a perfect addition to his big-money side.

“If Zlatan wants to come to City, I would immediately find him a place,” The Sun reported Mancini as saying.

Ibrahimovic was part of a Serie A winning side at Inter Milan under Mancini and is on loan at neighbours AC Milan.

However, Mancini said that striker Mario Balotelli, signed for 24 million pounds from Inter Milan last summer, was still part of his future plans.

“He will definitely stay,” Mancini said. “Mario is an ongoing bet.
“He has shown he has all the right qualities, but needs to do more, much more, to give a sense to his talent.”

Ronaldo treble destroys Getafe

Cristiano Ronaldo took his season’s Spanish league tally to 36 goals by scoring a hat-trick as Real Madrid thrashed lowly Getafe 4-0 at home.
Ronaldo is now five goals ahead of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi in the battle for top scorer. Not since Hugo Sanchez scored 38 goals for Real in the 1989-90 season has a striker been so effective in La Liga.
However, Messi will almost certainly have the satisfaction of a third straight league championship medal because Barca need just one more point from their last three games to clinch the title.
The defeat of Getafe left Real five points behind Barca. Messi and company will celebrate the title if they pick up just one point on Wednesday at midtable Levante.
Ronaldo gave Real the lead in the 24th minute with a perfect header to a clever centre from Mesut Ozil.
It was Ozil again who set up Ronaldo to make it 2-0 in the 58th minute, after Getafe keeper Oscar Ustari had foiled Real striker Gonzalo Higuain.
Supersub Karim Benzema made it 3-0 13 minutes from time, after controlling a through-ball from Xabi Alonso. All the night needed then was for Ronaldo to complete his hat-trick, and he did so from the penalty spot right at the end after being pulled down himself by defender Borja.
Tuesday’s other games all had relegation significance, with Racing Santander, Malaga and Deportivo Coruna all scoring vital home wins.
Santander beats Atletico
Santander came from behind to beat sixth-placed Atletico Madrid 2-1 with goals from Kennedy and Markus Rosenberg, while Malaga downed Sporting Gijon 2-0 on goals from Julio Baptista and Eliseu.
It was Malaga’s fifth straight win and practically guarantees their survival.
Earlier on Tuesday, Deportivo had battled out a 2-1 comeback over fifth-placed Athletic Bilbao 2-1, thanks to an equalizer from Adrian and an own goal from Xabi Castillo.
Former Spain playmaker Juan Carlos Valeron, now 35, who bossed the midfield for Deportivo, said: “It was crucial for us to win tonight, and we managed to do so. We had a bit of good luck with the goals, but you have to look for your luck in football.” Deportivo are now seventh from bottom. Malaga are now 10th, and Santander have their highest placing since 2008.

Liverpool captain Gerrard says he expects full-time job for Dalglish

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard said he expects Kenny Dalglish to be given the job as manager on a full-time basis at the end of the season.
Dalglish took over as manager on a short-term deal in January from Roy Hodgson and has taken the team from just above the relegation zone to fifth in the English Premier League.
Monday night’s 5-2 win at Fulham took them two points clear of Tottenham in the race for a Europa League spot - awarded for the fifth-placed team - and Gerrard said he was convinced Dalglish would be offered a full-time role.
“I’m sure it’s around the corner,” Gerrard told Sky Sports. “I’m sure the owners are ready to put pen to paper.” Gerrard also praised the influence of Steve Clarke, the former Chelsea assistant coach who was brought to Liverpool by Dalglish soon after he got the job in January.
Dalglish, 60, who enjoyed a hugely successful spell in charge of the club at the end of the 1980s, said it was a team effort.
“It’s not a one-man band by any shape or form,” he said. “We’ve done fantastically well since January and it’s great credit to the players, Steve Clarke, Sammy (Lee) and the backroom staff.”

David Beckham in traffic accident, escapes uninjured

David Beckham

Football star David Beckham caused a traffic accident on a southern California highway, but was uninjured in the minor crash, Peoplemagazine reported Saturday.
Beckham’s black Cadillac rammed into the back of a stalled Mitsubishi near Los Angeles on Friday, Jennifer Connolly of the California Highway Patrol told the magazine.
Beckham and his 12—year—old son Brooklyn were not injured in the accident, eonline.com reported. The driver of the other car complained of neck pain and was taken for examination at an area hospital.
The British football star lives with his wife, Victoria, and their three sons in Los Angeles. The couple are expecting a fourth child in July. Beckham’s contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy ends in November at the end of the season.

AC Milan clinches Serie A title

AC Milan supporters celebrate after Milan won the scudetto on Saturday.
AC Milan secured their 18th national title on Saturday by drawing 0-0 away to Roma with two games left in the Italian Serie A season.
The draw pushed the Devils nine points clear of title holders Inter Milan, who play Sunday at home to Fiorentina. Inter would finish second even by drawing level at the top as they lost both direct clashes with the city rivals.
“All the scudetti are beautiful,” said Milan vice president Adriano Galliani. “The last is always the best. (Coach Massimiliano) Allegri was very clever in his first season (at Milan). He follows in the path of our great coaches.” Veteran midfielder Gennaro Gattuso said: “Seven years without a scudetto were a lot. The way we won it was great. They said we were dead. But passion is important and always counts.” Roma had midfielders Daniele De Rossi and Simone Perrotta suspended, but played a good first half. They were the first to threaten when Mirko Vucinic, on 14 minutes, controlled with his chest a cross from Marco Cassetti, but had his flick bravely saved by Christian Abbiati.
The Montenegro international came close again nine minutes later, when he saw Alessandro Nesta intervene with the tip of his boot to deflect another deep feed from Cassetti.
Aleandro Rosi came on for the injured Matteo Brighi and on 37 minutes forced another save from Abbiati, who also blocked from Fabio Simplicio before the break.
The Devils were disappointing in the first half despite welcoming back from suspension Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who played upfront next to Brazilian Robinho, with the recovering Pato sitting on the bench.
Early in the second half, Robinho curled a shot against the right post and substitute midfielder Massimo Ambrosini botched a volley inside the box as Milan tried to switch gears.
Kevin-Prince Boateng, on the hour, lobbed past Alexander Doni off an Ambrosini assist, but missed by a whisker before the Roma custodian had trouble deflecting a searing, but central free kick from Ibrahimovic.
The Giallorossi from the capital moved level with Lazio into fourth place, which awards a Champions League berth through a preliminary round.
Lazio can regain fourth place on Sunday as they visit Udinese, who trail one point adrift.
Earlier on Saturday, Palermo came from behind with goals from Fabrizio Miccoli and Cesare Bovo to edge relegated Bari 2-1 and retain a safe mid-table position.
Palermo remained six points behind the Europa League zone, but could still secure a berth for the tournament if they qualify for the Italian Cup final.
The Sicily side welcome the Devils for a second-leg semi-final on Tuesday after a 2-2 away draw at the Giuseppe Meazza, where Inter welcome Roma on Wednesday with a 1-0 lead from the first leg.
